At least 30% of couples who need my help, do so because the male partner has a sperm problem. Every infertility docs' style of practicing medicine is different. Some docs say, the treatment of a male sperm problem is IVF with ICSI. This translates into, if you take the egg and inject the sperm into the egg, you've fixed the problem - so why go searching for a cause? 7 Things you should know about Fertility Monitors

1. Spending a lot of money on a fancy digital fertility monitor doesn't mean that you will have a higher chance of pregnancy. Far from. Buy a simple test kit. 2. False positives are common - this is when the test tells you that you are ovulating when you are not. If you have a positive every day – ask you doctor about being evaluated for a common condition called PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). 3. If you have 28-30 day cycles and you are less than age 40, start testing on cycle day 10. Test every day until you have a positive. Then STOP! Physical activity and Female Fertility

Patients are always asking me, “Can I continue to run everyday while undergoing infertility treatment?” It isn’t unusual for a patient to say, “My Mom thinks that the reason why I’m not getting pregnant is because I exercise too much, is she right?” This is what we know: Women who exercise most days of the week have been shown to be 3 times more likely to have fertility problems than inactive women. Increased Risk of Autism for Moms over 40

Researchers from UC Davis published their findings in the February issue of the journal Autism Research showing that mothers who conceived over the age of 40 had  51 percent higher odds of having a child with autism compared with mothers between the ages 25 and 29. It's unclear why the risk goes up with maternal age but as we are seeing more and more women going through IVF over age 40 - we need to keep these results in perspective.   (more…)
