Take a second to read about this book new book coming out next week because it’s going to be the topic of many conversations surrounding pregnancy.

The idea that an economist is going to rewrite the rules of pregnancy is refreshing to me and here’s why: It doesn’t take a medical doctor to make sense of medical literature. I tell my fertility patients (not my pregnant patients) all the time: it’s OK to drink coffee, it’s OK to drink alcohol. Coffee and alcohol in moderation do not affect your fertility but no matter what I say patients actually feel better cutting it out completely. I’ve combed through all the studies too and tell patients this very thing….but nonetheless, they would rather just stop.
I’m not sure Oster is rewriting the rules of pregnancy, but hopefully she will change the conversation on all the fertility message boards that make women feel like they are crazy for even thinking about a cup of coffee in the morning. If getting pregnant were only that easy….
